John Makepeace Furniture Designer and Maker
Sir Peter Hall
Commissioning furniture by John MakepeaceCommissioning arises from the creative recognition that the perfect solution does not yet exist.
The way we work is flexible, but tends to follow a three stage process.
Stage 1: The IdeaJohn Makepeace works closely with each client to understand their wishes. "I prefer to visit a prospective client to explore the location and character of the space and to discuss the practical issues - the choice of materials, timescale and budget including design fees." The conclusions are then confirmed in writing.
Stage 2: The DesignMany concepts are explored. Drawings, models and mock-ups are developed until a solution is evolved that fulfils and hopefully exceeds the client's expectations. Unexpected and surprising solutions may occur. The proposed design and confirmation of costs are then presented to the client for approval and signing off.
Stage 3: The MakingUpon receipt of the deposit, workshop capacity is reserved and timber is selected and prepared. The highly skilled craftsmen then embark on turning the vision into a reality through the many painstaking processes of making, in close liaison with the designer.
Clients are encouraged to visit the workshop to follow the progress of their commission.
